JEFFERSON — Jefferson girls tennis coach Lou Murphy had a good problem to start the season — a glut of interest.
Twenty-seven girls went out for the team, which prompted Murphy to meet with his experienced players before the season and try something different.
“Every opportunity I had, we all came to an agreement, we’d rotate the lineup and they’d have to sit to letter so many girls,” the veteran coach said. “We had great team unity.”
The Falcons ended up lettering 12 girls in the 2017 season and finished first in the All-American White Tier for the third time in the last four years.
The letter-winners included seniors Natalie Fioritto, Brooke Noscal, Candace Burkhammer and Heidi Wickert; juniors Kate Brand, Georgia Woodworth, Emma Kovacs and Callae Moody and sophomores Joanna Houser, Meg Jacobs, Elle Vence and Erin Myers.
“A couple of girls came out for the first time and
did well,” Murphy said. “Kate Brand and Meg Jacobs
were a very good doubles team. They ended up as gold-medal winners of the county tournament at second doubles.”
