SS. John and Paul’s volleyball team warmed up for its big non-conference match with Jefferson on Monday by capturing the championship of the Windham Tournament on Saturday, taking out fellow Division IV regional qualifier Cuyahoga Heights in the title match, 25-14, 25-22, and sweeping three matches in its day’s work.

Jamie Kapferer led the Heralds (8-0) in the title match with 13 points and 14 ace spikes in a 25-of-28 spiking performance. Nicole Pawlowski added nine points to go with 12-of-12 setting and 44-of-45 passing, while Mallory Johnson added seven more points.

n SS. JOHN AND PAUL 25-25, LABRAE 2-16 — Seventeen points and 19-of-19 passing by Pawlowski led the Heralds to their opening win. Mary Mahoney added 11 points, while Kristina Krumins contributed six points and 21-of-21 setting.

n SS. JOHN AND PAUL 25-25, FIELD 18-20 — Thirteen points and nine ace spikes by Kapferer powered the Heralds in their second match. Pawlowski added nine points and 51-of-53 passing, while Johnson had seven points and five ace spikes.

n LAKESIDE 25-19-25, GENEVA 20-25-17 — The Dragons started on the road to what eventually would be a runner-up finish in the Chardon Invitational behind eight points and 39-of-43 setting from Mallory Zappitelli, who was named to the all-tournament team. Tayler Pugliese added six points, was 32-of-33 setting with 12 aces and had five ace spikes, Jessica Kaydo added six points and Miranda Newsome, who also made the all-tournament team, had 13 ace spikes and three ace blocks. Nine points by Katie Pristov and eight more by Taylor Webb, along with 19-of-24 spiking with six aces, weren’t enough for the Eagles.

n LAKESIDE 25-25, CARDINAL 9-22 — Eight points and seven ace spikes from Newsome and six points, four ace spikes and 19-of-19 setting with 10 aces led the Dragons to victory in their second match.

n CRESTWOOD 27-25, LAKESIDE 25-23 — Pugliese scored eight points and was flawless in spiking at 7-of-7, setting at 28-of-28 and passing at 8-of-8, but it wasn’t enough to conquer Crestwood. Zappitelli scored six points and was 41-of-42 passing with 28 aces and Newsome had five points, 11 ace spikes, five blocks and was 28-of-29 passing.

n GENEVA 25-25, SHAKER HEIGHTS 9-13 — Six points each from Breanna Freeman, Brittany Powers and Kristyn Pristov powered the Eagles past the Raiders. Freeman also was a perfect 38-of-38 setting with 14 ace sets.

n MAYFIELD 25-25, GENEVA 17-21 — Despite five points and 4-of-4 spiking by Katie Pristov, the Eagles (3-2) were unable to handle the Wildcats.

n JEFFERSON 25-25, SHAKER HEIGHTS 16-16 — Fourteen points each from Karley Febel and Alex Willis got the Falcons off to a good start at the Chardon Invitational.

n CHARDON 20-25-25, JEFFERSON 25-20-23 — Despite 20 points and 19 ace passes by Britiny Spangler and 10 points each from Katie O’Connor and Kara Bloom, the Falcons couldn’t top the Hilltoppers. Cassandra Beck led Chardon (5-2, 1-1 Premier Athletic Conference) with 21 points.

n CRESTWOOD 25-25, JEFFERSON 18-14 — Spangler had seven points and 14 ace passes, while Colleen Geraghty and Febel each had six points, but it wasn’t enough to carry the Falcons past Crestwood.

n GRAND VALLEY 25-25, BADGER 9-6 — Nine points from Kelly Wagner and 5-of-5 spiking led the Mustangs to a non-conference win. Annslee DeLuca supplied eight more points, while Chelsea Hanck, Justine Kassay and Robyn Moodt each scored six points.

n BROOKFIELD 25-25, GRAND VALLEY 16-15 — Six points from Kassay were not enough for the Mustangs to get by the Warriors. Megan Krzynowek added four points and 11-of-14 spiking for GV (5-2).

n CONNEAUT 25-25, BRISTOL 10-16 — Eleven points from Sadie Duris and six points and four ace spikes by Nichele Johnson helped the Spartans produce their first victory of the season.

n CHAMPION 25-27, CONNEAUT 18-25 — Justin Van Cise scored six points, while Jessica Kaderly and Rachel Pryately had five each, but it wasn’t enough for the Spartans (1-6) to overcome the Golden Flashes.

n HARVEY 25-25, FAIRPORT 20-17 — Eight points by Melissa Mohner led the Red Raiders past the Skippers in non-conference action. Sam Krueger added seven points and 46-of-49 setting.

n LEDGEMONT 25-20-25, HARVEY 21-25-23 — Despite 10 points and seven ace spikes by Briana Woodburn and nine points and eight ace spikes by Shannon Cruz, the Red Raiders weren’t able to hold off the Redskins. Jen Yeats supplied seven more points and two ace spikes.

Boys soccer

Eric Gavorski scored off a Ryan Markgraf assist to give Madison a first-half lead, but Jack Rolf scored in the second half for Kenston to force a 1-1 tie. Casey Blabolil had 11 saves for the Blue Streaks (3-1-1).

Girls soccer

Sidnee Atwell’s unassisted goal gave Riverside a first-half lead, but Nordonia matched that score in the second half for a 1-1 tie. Ashley Robinson had three saves for the Beavers (4-0-1).

n CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN 6, JEFFERSON 1 — Callie Busch scored an unassisted goal for the only score by the Falcons, but the Patriots offset that with three goals from Sara Tonelli, two by Chelsea Sharpe and a goal and an assist by Kara Selle.
