There is never any shortage of the color red in the gym when Edgewood and Jefferson meet on the hardwood.
However, this Tuesday when the Falcons and Warriors hook up at Edgewood, the gymnasium will be full of red for a different reason — cardiovascular awareness.
The theme for Tuesday’s game will be a “Red Out” where everyone in attendance is encouraged to wear red “creating a sea of red and cardiovascular awareness.”
Red T-shirts that say “Rock the Beat” will be on sale today and tomorrow as well as at the door before the game for $10.
All proceeds from the sale will go to the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.
According to Edgewood Athletic Director Steve Kray, local businesses will be purchasing shirts for the Edgewood and Jefferson varsity teams to wear during warmups for the game.
“That night we will also have baskets, we asked each winter sports team to put together a basket,” Kray said. “Those baskets will be given out in a type of Chinese auction. We will also have a 50-50 with the boosters donating their proceeds from the 50-50 to the AHA.”
In addition to the fundraisers, Edgewood will also be honoring those who have suffered from heart decease or strokes.
“We’re going to be doing some things at halftime to honor people who have survived heart decease or strokes so we’re going to do a memorial kind of thing,” he said. “Also we’re going to do something where people can sign a heart and we’ll hang them in the cafeteria, again with all the proceeds going to the AHA.”
