Edgewood grad, Malone senior Ernst earns GMAC Athlete of the Week honor

Marcus Ernst went over the 1,000-point plateau in his high school playing days at Edgewood High School.

He has now suprassed the milestone in college.

On Thursday, Ernst, a 6-foot-7 senior forward, scored a team-high 24 points in the Pioneers’ 86-81 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) win over Tiffin.

He became the 54th member of the school’s 1,000-point club.

“I’ve been blessed with some great coaches and teammates here at Malone who made it possible to reach that milestone in my college career,” Ernst said.

Ernst had 15 in the first half, including an and-one with 2:13 to go, that put him over the 1,000-career mark.

He also grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds, to go with a career-high five blocked shots.

For his efforts, Ermst has been named Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Athlete of the Week from Feb. 15-21.

He is the first Malone men’s basketball player to receive the award since Sehill Mouliom accomplished the feat February 2020.

Ernst was a pivotal part of three Pioneer victories last week and earned a double-double with points and rebounds in all three games.

In total, Ernst averaged 20.3 points and 12 rebounds per game over the stretch and shot 63.4% from the field.

At Ohio Valley on Feb. 16, Ernst scored 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field and pulled down 11 boards in Malone’s 101-85 win.

Against Tiffin, Ernst netted 24 points, secured 14 rebounds and blocked five shots, a high in all three categories for the week.

He also was 8-for-11 from the free throw line, the most makes and attempts this year.

Finally, in the 96-73 win

at Cedarville, Ernst finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Ernst entered the top 10 in rebounding in Malone history on Feb. 16.

On the season, Ernst is averaging 16.4 points per game, which ranks third on the team and seventh in the GMAC.

He leads Malone and the conference with 162 rebounds for an average of 9.5 per contest.

“As always, I give all the glory to God and am blessed to be playing the game at such a high level,” Ernst said. “The journey these past four years have been a grind, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

 At Edgewood, he averaged 20.4 points, 10.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game as a senior, helping lead his team to the 2017 All-American Conference championship. Ernst was also named first team all-county, first team All-AAC, third team Northeast Lakes All-District and the Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation Co-Player of the Year.
