SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — An 82-year-old Ashtabula man died Monday evening after the vehicle he was driving hit the back of a garbage truck on Route 20, according to the Ashtabula County Coroner's Office.

The driver of a green 2011 Mack garbage truck, Andrew Clark of Andover,  was driving west in the 4400 block of Route 20, when he stopped in the right hand lane of the roadway to empty a trash can, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

While Clark was standing in the driveway of the home, a black 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Charles Reddig, 82, failed to stop and swerved off the right side of the road, according to the OHP report.

Reddig's Jeep hit the back end of the garbage truck and the man standing in the driveway.

Reddig was wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected upon impact, according to the OHP report.

Both men were transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where Reddig later died, according to the coroner's report.

Three OHP troopers, Saybrook Township Fire Department, Ashtabula City Fire Department and Geneva City Fire were on the scene until late Monday night.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident. It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
