Saybrook Township man sentenced in rape case

Scott M. Leininger

JEFFERSON — A Saybrook Township man was sentenced after agreeing to a plea deal in a child sex case that will see him spending two decades in prison.

Scott Leininger, 35, pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and was sentenced by Judge Gary Yost to 20 years in prison, according to court records. Leininger had originally faced 10 counts of rape for crimes against children, his indictment states.

Ashtabula County Prosecutor Cecelia Cooper said after 20 years upon release from prison, Leininger will be subject to five years of probation.

“After speaking with the family of the victims, we agreed this plea was in their best interests and served the purposes of sentencing,” Cooper said. “It punishes the defendant and saves the victims the psychological trauma of having to testify at a trial.”

All of the rape Leininger committed occurred in Saybrook Township. The crimes occurred between January 2015 and December 2016 with children under the age of 13 and under the age of 10, according to the original indictment.
