ASHTABULA — A man shot a 41-year-old Conneaut man in the arm early Tuesday morning when he wouldn’t leave a neighbor’s house, police said.

The ordeal began sometime before 2 a.m. in the 5800 block of Washington Avenue when the Conneaut man tried to get his girlfriend to leave with him. Several of the woman’s friends were at the house and she did not want to leave, police said.

The boyfriend left, but returned about 10 minutes later, police said.

“The girlfriend didn’t want to have anything to do with him at this point,” Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell said. “A neighbor from across the street came over and tried to get the boyfriend to leave. When he wouldn’t leave, the neighbor shot him.”

The Conneaut man was shot in the arm and treated at the emergency room at Ashtabula County Medical Center, according to police reports.

His injury was not serious, Stell said, and the man checked himself out of the emergency room.

Police recovered a revolver from the scene, he said.

Charges are pending against the shooter, a 34-year-old Ashtabula man and potentially the boyfriend as well, Stell said.

“There were a lot of people there and we are still trying to sort it all out,” he said.
