ASHTABULA — An Ashtabula man is behind bars today after police found drugs and a handgun in a vehicle.

The Crime Enforcement Agency of Ashtabula County was performing surveillance Tuesday near the Circle K store at the corner of Main Avenue and West 58th Street. As a part of an on-going drug investigation, officers stopped a vehicle in the parking lot, which was the focus of the investigation.

The driver, Markel Ford, 23, of Ashtabula, was arrested on an un-related warrant, police said.

After removing Quamie Willis, 26, from the passenger side of the vehicle, police found a loaded .45 caliber handgun in the front seat by the passenger door. Police also found large amounts of suspected heroin, fentanyl and two bags of marijuana, police said.

Willis was taken into custody on firearms charges with federal firearms charges pending, police said.

At his arraignment Thursday, Willis entered ‘no plea’ to felony charges of carrying weapons under disability and carrying a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Municipal Judge Laura DiGiacomo set bail at $150,000 cash or surety. Willis is being held in the Ashtabula County jail in Jefferson.

As of Friday, Ford had not been charged, but he is facing drugs charges, pending lab reports, police said.
