ASHTABULA — A 21-year-old man is in the intensive care unit after being shot late Thursday night in Ashtabula, according to Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell.
Police were notified when friends of the victim, whose name is not being released at this time, drove him to the emergency room at Ashtabula County Medical Center shortly before midnight, according to the police report.
The victim suffered a serious gunshot wound to the abdomen, Stell said.
Three carloads of friends and family showed up at the emergency room. They told police the victim went to the store "somewhere in the city" at about 11:30 p.m. and returned about 15 minutes later with the gunshot wound, Stell said.
The victim was transported by medical helicopter to a Cleveland area hospital.
Police are waiting until the victim is out of intensive care before talking to him, Stell said.
The incident is under investigation.
