GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — A 22-year-old Independence man drowned early Sunday morning.

Police Chief Tim Bruckman said that at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday the man went into the water near the west end of the Strip, where State Route 531 ends just east of State Route 534, and got about 150 yards from the shore when he realized he could not get back. The man then began yelling for help.

A police officer heard his call for help and entered the water. The officer made it part of the way to the man when the victim went under and could no longer be seen, Bruckman said.

Some nearby residents launched a canoe, which the officer took and then found the man's body. The officer began CPR on the victim but was unable to get a response. The fire department was on the scene and EMS attempted CPR, but they were unsuccessful. The victim was transported to University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The water was about 56 degrees and the victim was in the water for six minutes, Bruckman said.

The victim's name had not been publicly released as of early Sunday evening because his family has not yet been notified.

It is unknown if any outside factors, such as a medical condition or alcohol, contributed to the man's death.
