ASHTABULA - - One man offered to trade cigarettes for sexual favors.
Another man said he gave his wife a bouquet of flowers, moments earlier.
But no matter, what the story, city police arrested eight men in a little more than an hour during an undercover prostitution sting Thursday night at South Park.
"We had five police officers plus the decoy," Capt. Robert Stell said. "Even with all those people there, we had a hard time keeping up with it."
The eight "Johns," from Ashtabula and Andover and ranging in age from 27 to 58, were picked up after soliciting sex from a female posing for police as a prostitute in the park, located in the area of West 50th Street and Main Avenue.
"Most of the men were willing to pay $20 to $30 for various sex acts," Stell said.
The men were charged with solicitation, a third-degree misdemeanor. They are:
- Wilfredo Ali, 58, Andover
- Jesse Comadoll, 37, Ashtabula
- Joseph Dunford, 29, Ashtabula
- David Fuller, 47, Ashtabula
- Jose Martinez, 29, Ashtabula
- Gilberto Martinez, 27, Ashtabula
- Jose Robles, 43, Ashtabula
- Marco Zavala, 30, Ashtabula
City police detectives last year focused on arresting prostitutes in the city.
"We put a dent in the number of prostitutes," Stell said. "Now we are going after the Johns."
