AUSTINBURG TOWNSHIP — An Ashtabula man died Friday night after his motorcycle went left of center and hit a sport utility vehicle head on, according to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Rodney R. Ward, 48, was traveling southbound on Windsor Mechanicsville Road, north of Orchard Road, and went left of center and collided with the vehicle driven by Okey J. Bland III heading northbound on Windsor Mechanicsville Road, the release states.

Bland was not injured and was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the release.

Ward was transported to UH Geneva Medical Center where he died, the release states. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

“Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash,” the release states. The crash remains under investigation.

Emergency workers from the Austinburg Fire Department, Community Care Ambulance and the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
