SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — An Ashtabula man died late Saturday evening following a single vehicle crash on Austinburg Road near the intersection of Old Austinburg Road, according to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Xadiel Rivera-Santiago, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash around 10:34 p.m., according to the OHP. He was a passenger in a 2017 BMW driven by Alfred Rojas Jr., also of Ashtabula.
The preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Austinburg Road while negotiating a curve in the roadway and drove off the right side of the roadway striking a ditch and vaulting in the air, the press release states.
“After striking several trees the BMW came to rest back on the roadway,” the release states.
Rojas sustained injuries in the crash and was taken by Saybrook Township Emergency Medical Services to UH Geneva Medical center, according to OHP. He was later flown by helicopter to University Pittsburgh Medical Center Hamot in Erie.
Rojas was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, the release states.
“At this time it does appear that alcohol and/or drugs were involved. Speed may also have been a factor in the crash,” according to the release.
The crash is still under investigation.
