JEFFERSON — Grant dollars were approved for a Geneva-on-the-Lake drainage project during the Ashtabula County Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday at the county fair.

The board approved a $90,300 Community Development Block Grant through the Community Services Department for a project with a total estimated cost of $261,960 awarded to Easton Excavating.

Janice Switzer, Community Services and Planning director, said the project involves resurfacing 1,080 linear feet of Old Lake Road including partial replacement of curbs. It isn't scheduled to begin until after Thunder on the Strip, she said.

The work on Old Lake Road will include the replacement of 15 catch basins and all curbing on the road in the residential area, according to Geneva-on-the-Lake Mayor Dwayne Bennett.

A variety of grant funding, loans and local dollars will contribute to paying for the work, Bennett said.

"This is part of our ongoing effort to get infrastructure and roads back up to par," Bennet said. "We've been trying to hammer some projects out in the last four to five years."

The work is part of a broader project which will address storm outflows on the lake which have caused erosion issues, Bennett said.

"We're trying to come up with resources to repair those as well," he said.

Bennett said work on Old Lake Road should be finished by October.
