GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — Five Ohio wineries were honored by Scenic Ohio on Friday afternoon at the Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake.
Scenic Ohio is an organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the scenic charter of Ohio's communities and countryside, according to the organization's website.
The Lakehouse Inn and Winery, located in Geneva-on-the-Lake, was one of the award winners and was one of the wine-tasting participants during the event that also included a tour of area wineries.
The Ohio Wine Producers Association Executive Director Doniella Winchell said the awards were important for the five wineries that were honored. She said the awards were given because of the wineries helped conserve and preserve Ohio's many scenic resources.
The other four winery winners were Breitenbach Winery of Dover, Terra Ccotta Winery of New Concord, Meranda-Nixon of Ripley and Gervasi Vineyard of Canton.
Matt MacLaren, director of TourismOhio, and Winchell discussed the importance of tourism in Ohio. He said it has been a good year for tourism with $46 billion coming into the state.
He said the state tourism organization is excited about all of the great events the state sponsored last year and is looking forward to more in 2020.
"We are going to be involved even more in promoting Ohio's wine industry," MacLaren said.
MacLaren said the organization has been advertising Ohio in all the surrounding states.
Winchell said the OWPA started in 1978 and there were 13 wineries in the state and the organization had a budget of $750. She said there are now 328 wineries in the state and agricultural research has opened doors to grow grapes in all parts of the state.
