GENEVA — Although the Geneva High School Swim Team has just reorganized this season after a four year hiatus, the Eagles recently clinched the top spot at the All County Swim Meet in a winner-takes-all tie breaker.
“I was just speechless after the meet,” Coach Susan Thomas said. “It just seems incredible that they could accomplish this in their first season after four years. They just keep working harder and harder and improving every day. Many of them are first time competitors, but they are serious about the sport. I am so proud of these swimmers.”
The Geneva High School Swim Team, which was the victim of funding cuts four years ago, exists today because of Thomas and a contingent of students.
Thomas said the generosity of local businesses who donated funds to reestablish the team, and fundraising efforts by the swimmers, have allowed the team to practice and compete at Spire Institute’s aquatic facility in Harpersfield.
To keep the team afloat, Thomas said fundraising efforts are ongoing. A spaghetti dinner fundraiser hosted by the team will be 6 p.m. Jan. 27 at Grand River Winery.
Tickets are $12 per person. Tickets will be available at the Winery and may be purchased at the door or in advance by contacting Thomas or team members.
