This is where you can find information about site problems, changes, plans, or tutorials on various features on the site. It is essentially the web master's blog, but "system status report" sound more professional than "my blog".
Obit page updated.
Well that was a frustrating bit of computer mischief!
The glitch in the news feed that caused it to appear that the site is not updated has been repaired. I'll begin re-posting other stories in a bit.
I've also changed the way the obituaries are displayed so that there are fewer clicks to read them. It will also be easier for a visitor to catch the past obituaries.
I am working on reformatting the obituary page to make it more user friendly. The delay is because of an issue I noticed with the news feed that would have compounded the confusion had I put more on the new site.
This puts my target for the start of uploading the archives to 2003 on Thursday morning. I have to do this in the wee-hours due to server demands.
Hopefully the 're-tooling' of the obits page will make it easier to navigate and find what you are looking for.
There was a question about obituary archives on the forums and I wanted to respond to it here.
One of the fundamental changes between this presentation model and our previous is that there isn't an "archive page" in the strictest sense of the word. Everything on the site is accessible through a full text search.
This month's effort will be to 'upload' our historical data to this platform. Our stories since 2003 have been stored fairly rationally, however the photos are embarrassingly disorganized from a human perspective. A computer can find them easily enough, but getting them to the new platform and attaching them to the correct story is going to require some careful work.
There are also some pre-2003 articles I found that I'd like to get on-line again.
There's also that RSS feed 'thingie' that has some interesting potential for delivering information to you 'different than before' but better, I think. However, I'm not going to truly exploit that technology until Microsoft catches up with the open-source community (Flock Rocks because it's has a spell checker you can use when filling out forms!).
If you can't find the information you are looking for, you can always send me an email by clicking on the feedback link at the bottom of the page. It may take a while for me to respond, but I will get back to you as soon as I can.
As you can probably tell, we have changed our web site around a little bit ... or is this a strange April Fools joke? I wonder ...
At any rate, please don't despair at the apparent lack of content today. After a number of other tasks are completed this weekend, I will begin the process of posting our historical data.
There is about a weeks worth of stories on-line. For those who visit the currents, I haven't caught that section with last week's stories yet.
Things should be tided up by Tuesday.
Thank you for visiting us on the web and enjoy your weekend!
