The Braden eighth-grade volleyball team had four players score 12 or more points in defeating Jefferson, 14-25, 25-11, 25-9, Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Junior High Volleyball Tournament at Geneva High School.

Grace Kendzerski scored 15 points with four aces, Maddie DeGeorge had 13 points with five aces, while Becca Mugavero and Amanda Rodenbacher each added 12 points with five more for the Bulldogs (12-1). Ashley Thomas scored nine points (4) and Kayla Tobias added eight points (5). DeGeorge had six ace spikes and Mugavero had five.

The Bulldogs’ seventh-grade team also advanced to the championship with a 25-11, 26-24 victory over SS. John and Paul. Keegan McTrusty scored seven points with two aces and Sydney Rowe scored seven points with one ace to lead the Bulldogs (13-0). Judith Silvieus scored six points (2 aces) and Katie Thomas, Sydney McCaleb and Jamie Rogers all scored five points. Rowe was 8-8 passing and Silvieus was 10-10 setting.

The Braden seventh graders will play Geneva at 4 p.m. in the tournament championship at Geneva High School. The Braden eighth graders will face Geneva immediately following the seventh-grade championship. Both matches will be a rematch of last year’s tournament championships.

Eighth-grade soccer

Maggie Meaney scored on a penalty kick and added an assist to lead Braden past Riverside, 4-0. Jacob Foltz, Caity Mills and Emily Nerad all added goals for the Bulldogs. Rachel Foote had one save in the shutout and Riverside attempted only shot on goal in the match. The Bulldogs will host Geneva on Thursday.


Shannon Cruz was 41-of-54 spiking with 12 aces in Harvey’s loss to Ledgemont, 22-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-17, 15-8, in a regular-season match. Melissa Mohner scored 18 points with three aces and Briana Woodburn was 36-43 spiking with 13 aces.

Division II volleyball

Liberty defeated Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, 25-22, 25-23, 25-19, at the Division II sectional tournament at Jefferson. Hubbard defeated Niles McKinley, 25-8, 25-6, 25-10. Hubbard, seeded third, will play Liberty at approximately 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a sectional championship.

Division III volleyball

Chagrin Falls defeated Maplewood, 25-8, 25-8, 25-13, at the Division III sectional tournament at Berkshire. Richmond Heights defeated Beachwood, 25-21, 25-15, 24-26, 25-17. Chagrin Falls, seeded third, will play Hawken at approximately 6:30 p.m. Thursday for a sectional championship. Richmond Heights will face top-seeded Gilmour Academy at 2 p.m. Saturday for a sectional championship.

Division IV volleyball

Kirtland defeated Bloomfield, 25-21, 25-17, 25-15, at the Division IV sectional tournament at Grand Valley. Kirtland will take on second-seeded Chanel at approximately 1 p.m. Saturday for a sectional title.
