GENEVA - - Memorial Field from all appearances looks like it's back to normal after being flooded Friday morning.

There were about 3 feet of water sitting on the football field after a nearby creek flooded from the heavy rain. The creek runs along the stadium perimeter, and when the area got hit with heavy rain Thursday evening and Friday morning, the creek overflowed.

By Friday evening, the waters had receded, according to Geneva Area City School Superintendent Ronald Donatone. The football field, located on Eastlawn Street, should be fine as long as it is allowed to dry.

However, the booster stand and main field house aren't doing so well. The two buildings were flooded. Football equipment, including uniforms, was stored in the field house. Donatone estimates $10,000 of damage was done to equipment, including uniforms.

In the booster stand, food and equipment were damaged by floodwaters. All the damage estimates haven't been completed yet, Donatone said.

"Damage estimates might reach $40,000 to $50,000," Donatone said.

Unfortunately, most insurance policies don't include flood coverage, he said. For that reason, the school district is working with the city of Geneva and submitting damage reports to the state and federal governments in the hopes of receiving some financial aid.
