SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Senior year is such a bittersweet time in one’s life. It is a huge milestone as well as a great accomplishment. There are so many things going on. As the end of the year is rapidly coming to a close, it is finally becoming surreal. The last month at school at St. John is all about the seniors.
This last month of school is very busy for the seniors; the first of many events was prom on May 10. Prom at St. John was a wonderful event. The evening began at St. John’s cafeteria. The theme for this year’s prom was “Midnight Masquerade” which was put on by the junior class. The night started with dinner at 7. The main courses were prime rib and stuffed chicken along with a side salad, broccoli, and the crowd favorite, cheesy potatoes. The delicious dinner was cooked by Rose Ann Jones and Cathy Bliss.
After dinner, the juniors and seniors were able to vote for prom king and queen. After some dancing, the king and queen were announced. The 2014 Prom King and Queen are Matt Pinelli and Emily Powers.
However, the festivities weren’t over after prom. The junior class planned after-prom activities which included an inflatable obstacle course, a photo booth, PS3 games, Wii games, and an ice cream bar. Prom was truly a night to remember.
The next major day for the seniors was Senior Signing Day on May 13. Senior Signing is an assembly put together for the seniors to announce their plans after high school in furthering their education at college. All of the students as well as family and friends were invited to come. Michelle Carney-Detore, an alumnus of St. John, was invited to speak for the assembly.
The next activity is Field Day, which was May 16 at Saybrook Township Park. The seniors were the leaders of the different colored teams, which included students in both the junior high and high school. The usual activities for Field Day included volleyball, bocce, wiffle ball, kick ball and dodge ball.
Graduation is scheduled for May 30. The day should start off with a Mass at Our Lady of Peace Parish, and then the baccalaureate breakfast immediately after at St. John. Afterwards, the students will have time to go home and get ready for graduation.
With graduation quickly approaching on May 30, we take the time to congratulate the class of 2014 and all of their great accomplishments.
