ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP —
It is already eight weeks into the new school year, and the Edgewood Senior High School National Honor Society selection committee is busy choosing its membership for the 2013-2014 school year. In order to be nominated for this prestigious honor, the student must carry a 3.20 grade point average on a scale of 4.00.
Jamie Mrosko, the National Honor Society adviser, said, “We look for leadership, character, service and scholarship when selecting nominees. We want the kids who represent our school the best.”
The National Honor Society committee takes into account various positions held by the nominees under the leadership category, but that is not the only quality the committee examines; students can be leaders amongst peers without holding offices. The committee also takes character into consideration, how students represent themselves and the community as members of Edgewood Senior High School. Service and volunteering are very important when it comes to selection for the National Honor Society.
A formal assembly for the entire student body, the “Tapping Ceremony,” will be Oct. 30 to honor those selected at Edgewood. Later that evening, a dinner in honor of the inductees and their parents will take place. On Oct. 12, the annual Powder Puff football tournament happened at Corlew Stadium. This was the first time the event was held under the lights. Junior and senior girls participated in games of flag football. Karl Williamson, principal of Edgewood High School, said, “This is a great way for girls to become involved and a great fund-raiser. It’s an event that brings out a lot of school spirit.”
The event was sponsored by the sophomore class to raise funds for next year’s Junior/Senior Prom.
The Edgewood Warrior Marching Band is once again putting on their annual Buckeye Boo haunted house fund-raiser. “The Boo” is back and scarier than ever, opening today through Sunday, Oct. 25-27; and Oct. 31 through Nov. 2. The Boo will be open from 7 to 10 p.m. on weeknights and 7 to 11 p.m. on the weekends. All tickets are $5. Come attend and support the outstanding band program at Edgewood!
