Published October 07, 2009 05:24 pm - SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — As the 2009-2010 school year kicked off, Lakeside High School students and faculty were surprised with the presence of the new junior high facility, which opened its doors this fall. This building, however, was not the only new addition to the Lakeside campus. The high school has a new vice principal, Timothy Neal, who was the former athletic administrator. There’s no limit to the Dragon spirit at Lakeside High Star Beacon SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — As the 2009-2010 school year kicked off, Lakeside High School students and faculty were surprised with the presence of the new junior high facility, which opened its doors this fall. This building, however, was not the only new addition to the Lakeside campus. The high school has a new vice principal, Timothy Neal, who was the former athletic administrator.
The excitement for the new school year was also shown during Spirit Week, which was the catalyst for Homecoming. This year’s theme, suggested by senior Glenn Haines, was somewhat of an enigma. Its title “Beyond…” was described by the members of Student Council as having absolutely “no limits” and the name was inspired by the vastness of the universe. To begin the annual events, seniors gathered in the Lakeside High School auditorium to elect the members of the Homecoming Court. The following day, the entire school assembled in the gymnasium for the official kick-off. The activities began with the annual Miss Lakeside Pageant, a mock contest consisting of senior boys competing in a “beauty” pageant. After much laughter and cheering, James “Nicole” Blair was announced Miss Lakeside 2009! Immediately after the crowning of Miss Lakeside it was time for this year’s Homecoming candidates to be announced. Rashaad Bell, James Blair, Kyle George, James Good, Levi Halsey, Joe Kelly, Derell McCaleb and Tre Scruggs competed for King. Additionally, Taylor Atzemis, Nicole Blair, Paige Campbell, Angela DeGeorge, Summer Kelly, Dianna Moore, Lisa Roane and Chloe Valerio vyed for Queen. Also included in the events was the annual Homecoming Parade which was held on Thursday evening. The following evening, Oct. 2, Lakeside High School’s football team played Riverside. However, prior to the game the royal court was announced. Queen Chloe Valerio and King Tre Scruggs, along with Princess Taylor Atzemis and Prince Rashaad Bell, had the privilege of presiding over the annual game, which ended with a score of 45 to 29 for Lakeside. Lakeside students can participate in many activities this year, from academic clubs to personal hobbies. Lakeside has four active community service organizations: The Red Cross Club, Leadership, Key Club and National Honor Society. The Model United Nations Club, which was previously advised by the late Anthony Leonelli, is managed by Valerie Silleck. Also, members of Academic Challenge are preparing for the Scholastic Bowl competition. The newest club at Lakeside is the Dragon Riders Ski Club, which will allow students to travel to Peek ’N Peak every Sunday afternoon, beginning Jan. 10, to master their snowboarding and skiing abilities. “We have been trying to get a ski club for years, and I’m glad we’re finally doing it,” said senior Ashleigh Parson. Unfortunately, the Dragons fall sports season is coming to an end. However, all Lakeside athletes involved in golf, football, volleyball, cross-country, soccer, and tennis truly appreciate the community support and hope that it will continue. Through all of this fall excitement, Lakeside students have increased their school pride and all students are encouraged to take advantage of the many available opportunities – from social activities, to clubs, to academics to athletics. The options are limitless!
