ORWELL — Ask any senior at Grand Valley High School how many days of school they have remaining, and they will most likely respond without thinking twice. Even though summer vacation is within reach, the senior class has a calendar full of events that will keep them on their toes before they put on their caps and gowns and leave behind their days as a student at GV. Whether these events are for pure fun or are honoring academic achievements, they are intended to bring the class of 2009 together for the last times before graduation.

Friday will be the junior/senior prom at DiLucia’s Banquet Hall in Warren. This year, the seniors chose the theme “A Starstruck Night” for the dance. The dance is intended for the juniors and seniors, although with school office permission they may bring an underclassman or a guest outside the GV school district.

On May 22, the second annual Student Council Powder-Puff Football game will take place. The students make the game feel just as it would on a Friday night during the regular football season. They fill the positions of referees, announcers, and they work the entrance gate. Each grade level has a team color and T-shirt jerseys accordingly. The best part of the game is that the money raised is used by the Student Council to purchase gifts during the holiday season for families in need in the Grand Valley area.

The final week of May will prove to be the busiest as the school year wraps up. May 26 will be the academic awards assembly for all high school grades. The freshmen and sophomore classes will be presented with their awards during third period, and during fourth period the juniors and seniors will receive theirs. Their final exams will be on May 27 and 28 with makeup exams on May 29.

The senior class will rehearse on June 1 for their graduation ceremony. The morning is scheduled to begin with a breakfast at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m., the students will adorn their caps and gowns and line up outside the gymnasium as they will on the actual graduation day. The high school concert band will practice the processional and recessional as the graduates enter and exit the gym. A final class photo will be taken, and the students will take their seats and practice having their names pronounced and receiving their diplomas.

June 2 will be the Grand Valley Academic Boosters senior awards banquet at 6:30 p.m. The seniors who will be honored at the banquet have voted for their favorite middle school teacher to be the guest speaker. The junior class members in National Honor Society will attend as waiters and waitresses for the evening.

An optional baccalaureate ceremony for seniors will be 7 p.m. June 4 at St. Mary Church in Orwell. Baccalaureate is a nondenominational church gathering for the graduates and their families meant for a time of reflection of the past and blessings for the future. After the ceremony refreshments are served and a photo slideshow is shown of the graduates. Everyone in the graduating class and family and friends are welcome to attend.

June 7 will mark the end of a chapter and beginning of a new one as the GV seniors graduate. At 2:15 p.m. the high school gymnasium will be packed with family, friends and faculty as the ceremony gets under way.

Grand Valley would like to congratulate the class of 2009 and wish them “happy trails” wherever their future paths lead them.
