GENEVA — The students of Geneva High School are heading down the home stretch with the beginning of the final nine weeks grading period.
Juniors and seniors are preparing for that special night of the high school year – the junior senior dinner dance. Jessica George and the Junior Class Steering Committee members have been hard at work preparing and raising funds for this big event. They have sold candles, chocolate and Domino’s Pizza. The theme this year is “Star Struck” and any GHS junior, senior or invited sophomore can enjoy a delicious roast beef dinner and hours of fun for a mere $30. This event will be May 1 at DeRubertis Party Center in Madison. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.
Those juniors or seniors wishing to invite a date who is not enrolled at GHS, or who is a GHS sophomore, must get administrative approval several weeks prior to the event. No tickets will be sold at the door. Once students enter the dance they are expected to stay until the event is over. If a student leaves, he may not re-enter the dance.
Proper attire is required for the dinner dance, and young ladies are asked to wear dresses or pant suits. Dresses must be longer than fingertips when the arms are extended down at the sides, and two-piece outfits must not expose the midriff area. Gentlemen should wear a tuxedo, a sport coat and tie, or a suit and dress slacks. No sweaters, shorts, jeans or tennis shoes are permitted.
Several GHS juniors are preparing to attend the Buckeye Boys and Buckeye Girls State conferences this summer. The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary Units are the proud sponsors that make this trip possible for the participants. This is a unique opportunity for boys and girls to be educated on the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of good citizenship. Delegates also learn more about city, county and state government. Eligible students must have completed their junior year of high school, have an interest in government, possess a high moral character and strong leadership abilities, and have above average scholastic abilities. GHS delegates this year are Jessica Coggins, Greg Howard and Matt Pfouts.
“I am so excited and anxious to attend the Buckeye Boys State, and so grateful to the American Legion for giving me this opportunity,” Howard said.
Come out and enjoy the sounds of the season at the GHS 2009 Spring Band Concert. This concert will be May 5 in the Geneva High School Auditorium. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and there will be no fee for admission. The concert band will be performing a variety of songs including Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in E-Flat,” “Old Songs” by Aaron Copland, “Infernal Dance and Finale” by Igor Stravinsky and “Music for a Darkened Theatre” by Danny Elfman. The whole Music Department has been looking forward to this event and they hope you will come to watch and listen.
“The real joy of performing a concert is the reactions that one sees on the faces of the performers after successfully performing the compositions on the program,” said band director Marion Carrel.
GHS Student Council is hoping to brighten hospital stays for ill children this spring with the second annual “Dress a Bear” competition. Each first period class was invited to adopt a bear and to dress it up. The bears will be displayed next week in the cafeteria, and students will vote for their favorites in such categories as “prettiest” and “most original.” Students in the winning first period classes will enjoy doughnuts at the end of the competition. All of the bears will then be delivered to young patients at Rainbow Children’s Hospital in Cleveland.
