ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Every year the Edgewood Warrior Band has a special night for its members. Military Ball was started many years ago as a way to recognize each student for his participation, and to honor the seniors’ loyalty to the “band family.” The event has evolved into a night of dinner, dance and awards.

Military Ball will be April 18 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ashtabula. Check-in begins at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m., and the night will end at 11 p.m. It will be chaperoned by members of the Buckeye Band Boosters and various Buckeye Local Schools administration will also be present.

Traditionally, tickets for band members were free; costs were covered by the Band Boosters. However, after the annual Warrior Band Night was rained out this past fall, funds were low, causing students to have to purchase tickets at $20 a piece.

The decorations at the dance will be music-oriented, and a disc jockey will be playing a mix of new and old music. It’s sure to be an enjoyable night for all!

The Edgewood Scholastic Bowl team participated in the county-wide Scholastic Bowl competition April 2 at Pymatuning Valley High School. This year’s team consisted of juniors Emily Stolfer, Jen Meranda and Lindey Campagne and alternates, junior Rick Stephenson and senior Kacie Herron.

Questions at the competition covered a variety topics such as mathematics and popular culture. Debra Quinn and the rest of the Scholastic Bowl committee added a book list this year as well, including the titles “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald and “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. The team is headed by Edgewood staff members Laura Buckius and Michelle Sassler.

“We are really proud of our team. They did a great job and answered some tough questions. All of their hard work and effort really showed,” said Sassler.

March 26 through March 28, Model United Nations delegates from high schools all over northeast Ohio gathered for the Kent State Model U.N. Conference held at Kent State University Ashtabula Branch.

“Overall, the conference went very well; three delegations received medals. They showed significant improvement over the three days, noticeable improvements in speaking abilities and in overall performance,” said Ryan Sardella, Edgewood Model U.N. adviser.

Although Southview took first place, followed by Avon Lake in second, Edgewood walked away with its fair share of awards. Seniors Kacie Herron and Jasneet Devgun, representing Iraq in the League of Arab States, received a “Su-perior,” which is the highest a delegation can score. Seniors Carey Santiana and Dillon Tackett, representing Vietnam on Security Council Four, received an “Excellent,” and sophomores Emily Johnson and Zach Adkins, representing Sudan on the Commission on the Status of Women, also received an “Excellent” rating.

“Emily and Zach did great, especially seeing as to how this was their first conference and that they’ve only been in Model U.N. two to three weeks prior to it,” said Sardella.

“It went really well; it always does. I have a lot more confidence in our group; we get better every year and I really feel like we did a lot better this time around,” said Devgun, Edgewood Model U.N. president.

“Israel-Palestine,” “Iran as a Nuclear Power,” “Violence Against the Girl-Child” and “Female Geni-tal Mutilation” were just a few of the topics discussed.

“It’s a very long and involved process for the delegates and it’s a lot of hard work, but it’s also very rewarding,” said Sardella.
