James H. Mason

ASHTABULA — James “Jim” Howard Mason, age 62, of North Ridge Road West, died Friday, April 16, 2011, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

The son of Robert H. and Vera I. (Allen) Mason, he was born June 11, 1948, in Ashtabula and remained a lifelong area resident. A proud Veteran of the United States Army, he served during the Vietnam War.

He worked for 35 years as a tree trimmer for Asplundh Tree Services prior to his retirement.

An avid outdoorsman, Jim liked to fish, trap and hunt with his beagles, Billy, Chance and Luke. For many years, he belonged to several area pool and dart leagues. A real people person, Jim enjoyed going to Bugler’s Inn and spending time with his friends while listening to country music and dancing. He was especially fond of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams and George Jones. An occasional trip to the casinos with his best friend, Cathy Mixer, provided many hours of entertainment.

Jim’s commitment to his family was admired by his many friends. A loving dad, grandpa, brother and best friend, he will be missed. His strength and courage, wit and wisdom and selflessness will be missed by all who loved him.

During his final weeks at home, his daughters, Jamie and Christina, his best friend, Cathy and son-in law, “Bumper” were his constant companions and caregivers.

He is survived by his best friend and companion of eight years, Cathy Mixer of Ashtabula; his children, Jamie (Bryon) ”Bumper” Woissol, Christina (Trampis Lutz) Mason and Jennifer (Gary) Hines, all of Ashtabula, Jeffrey (Bev) Elliott of Northfield and Michael (Claire Ferguson) Elliott of Austinburg; eleven grandchildren; and his sisters, Roberta Watson and Jane Stoneman, both of Ashtabula.

He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Janice Crabtree in 2005; and his parents.

A Memorial Service will be held 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 19th, at ZABACK-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with his friend, Kenny Osborne officiating.

Calling Hours will be from 4 p.m. until time of Service at 6 p.m., Tuesday, at the Funeral Home.
