Joe Y. Pope Jr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Lt. Col. (Ret.) Joe Y. Pope Jr., age 85, of Waynesboro, Pa. and formerly of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, in Quincy Village.

Born August 18, 1927, in Wytheville, Va., he was the oldest of four boys born to the late Joe Young Pope Sr. and Eva Claudine Waddell Pope. He grew up in Ivanhoe, Va. before moving as a boy to Ashtabula, Ohio, where he later graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1946. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Business from VPI (Virginia Tech) where he participated in the ROTC and later did graduate studies at Michigan State University. While at VPI, he met and married his wife, Jo Ann, on July 1, 1949, in Blacksburg, Va.

Joe served in the United States Army with a specialty of procurement and management of equipment rebuild facilities. He served in England after World War II and Korea after the Korean conflict. He also served as a liaison to the Ethiopian Army in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 1963-65. 

Joe retired as a Lt. Colonel after 20 years in the army. Following his retirement, he worked as a contract specialist for various local governments and was last employed by Maricopa County Government in Arizona as Senior Buyer. Joe also taught purchasing and management courses for the National Institute of Government Purchasing.

He was Methodist by faith and a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Phoenix, Ariz., and locally a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro. He was an avid golfer, a gifted storyteller, and was a generous and loving husband, father and grandfather.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ezra Pope.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Harris Pope; daughter, Cheryl Pope Cheek (Wayne) of Waynesboro, Pa.; son, Robert Pope (fiancé Kelly) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Joseph Cheek (Liza) of Gainesville, Va., Matt Cheek (Brittney) of Suwanee, Ga., Sarah Cheek Grainger (Jack) of London, England, James Pope of Phoenix, Ariz. and Lesley Pope of Herndon, Via.; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dexter Pope (Gladys) of Grand Haven, Mich. and Randy Pope (Frances) of Rome, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
