James L. Welty

ASHTABULA — James L. Welty, age 75, of North Kingsville, Ohio, died on Monday, July 8, 2013, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Born Oct. 25, 1937, in Bucyrus, Ohio, he was the son of Karl and Evelyn (Krumback) Welty.

James graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1956. He was best known for his stellar basketball career and received many honors including the 1956 All County First Team as the only unanimous choice and honorary captain. He also received mention on the All Ohio team. Even though he led his outstanding teams in scoring his junior and senior years, he was very mindful that defense and teamwork were the most important fundamentals. He also was an outstanding baseball player and was pursued by a number of semi-pro teams.

A Veteran, he was a member of the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Ord in Monterey, Calif., and Bamberg Germany. Returning home, he went to work for Krogers as a butcher and for Conrail/Norfolk and Southern Railroad. He had many friends at work and many became his friends for life.

James was a loved and respected son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He truly loved his family and working on his home. He spent much time at home creating, building and fixing just about anything. Glue, staples and tape never had so many uses. His best known project was his unique multi-colored partition wall he designed utilizing his medicine bottles.

He believed in living simply and was an extremely hard worker. A good cup of coffee and an occasional cigar on his patio was a good day. He enjoyed watching all Cleveland sports teams and the last few years became a fan of the 49ers. He also took pride in watching his grandkids play sports and playing in his yard.

James also loved to keep the birds and other wildlife in his yard fed on a daily basis.
