Martha Catrow

CONNEAUT — Martha Catrow, age 88, of Conneaut, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at home.

Born Sept. 25, 1924, in Conneaut, she was the daughter of John and Vilma (Kemppainen) Perala. Martha married Ned Catrow, the son of Charles E. and Grace (Longe) Catrow, on Dec. 1, 1945.

A Conneaut High School graduate, she worked as manager for the Conneaut A.A.A. office for 21 years.

Martha was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and played the organ and piano for services, along with singing for funerals and weddings at the former Faith Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed gardening and flowers, and could grow anything from a seed or a cutting. She was a great cook, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed collecting angels, doing cryptograms, watching game shows, and spending time with her friends and families. She participated in many exercise programs over the years, including chair yoga, right up until May, 2010.

She was a member of the Finnish American Heritage Society, enjoyed organizing school reunions, and volunteered working the election polls.

Martha participated in a pancreatic cancer trial after having surgery, and received 72 vaccines and was cancer-free for three years until it returned this past April. She courageously fought the cancer and passed away at home with her family surrounding her.

Survivors include her daughter, Stephanie (Thomas) Gildone of Conneaut; her grandchildren, Brandon Catrow of Conneaut, Ryan Catrow of Kent, Michael Catrow of Ravenna and Bryan Gildone of Conneaut; her great-grandchildren, Christian Williams and Michael Gregory Catrow; her nephew, David Colby of Conneaut; and many nieces and nephews on her husband’s side.

She was preceded in death by her father, John in 1958; her mother, Vilma in 1991; her husband, Ned in 1999; son, Gregory in 1998; grandson, Shawn Catrow in 1993; and her sisters, Marguerite Colby in 1995 and Minerva Kippen in 1980.

Graveside Service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 7th, at Glenwood Cemetery, West Main Road, Conneaut, with the Rev. Franklin Gore, of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, officiating.

Calling hours will not be observed.

Contributions may be made to the youth department of the Conneaut Public Library, or Hospice of the Western Reserve. Envelopes will be available at the Cemetery, and also at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, which has charge of arrangements.
