Philip M. Savarise Jr.

ASHTABULA — Philip M. Savarise Jr., age 83, passed away Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

He was born June 30, 1930, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Philip A. and Anna (Lombardi) Savarise, and had been an Ashtabula resident most of his life.

A 1948 graduate of Ashtabula High School, he was an enthusiastic athlete in his younger years, especially in basketball and baseball.

In 1991, he retired as a Vice President with Society Bank (formerly Farmers National Bank) after 24 years of service. Previously, he worked with the Sun Financial Corp. in Cleveland and Ashtabula.

A Veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during the Korean War, first with the 1st Armored Division at Ft. Hood, Texas, then with HQ Company KCOMZ in Taegu, Korea.

A dedicated and knowledgeable follower of many sports, he had always been a Cleveland fan. But in keeping with his commitment to “family first”, he became an avid Chicago White Sox and Bulls supporter, as he was so proud of his son Terry’s position with the team as Senior Vice President with both teams.

Many may not have known of his love of music. He sang in choir and as a soloist and enjoyed Big Band, jazz, and Frank Sinatra (having been to 4 of his concerts with his wife). He especially enjoyed traveling to see his cousin, Buddy Savarise, play with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and other ensembles as a young man.

Phil was also an accomplished cook and was known to be the “master chef” at all family events. He made legendary breakfasts and “macaroni” with homemade meatballs.

He more recently had taken to playing cards with his wife at her weekly card games.

His survivors include the love of his life for the past 56 years, Beatrice (Callahan) Savarise, whom he married August 31, 1957; five children, Terry (Tara) Savarise of Chicago, Ill., Michele Savarise and Phil “Flip” Savarise of Pickerington, Ohio, Stephanie Savarise of Athens, Ohio, and Joseph (Stacey) Savarise of Pickerington, Ohio; two grandchildren, Katie and Jon Savarise; one sister, Peggy (Joe) Massi of Conneaut; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a large number of extended family members and friends.
