JEFFERSON — Francis Joseph “Joe” Bodnar, age 69, of Route 307 East, Jefferson, Ohio, died Saturday morning, March 8, 2014, at the Jefferson Healthcare Center, after suffering a stroke three weeks ago.

He was born June 1, 1944, in Painesville, Ohio, the son of Francis L. and Dorothy V. (Foster) Bodnar and has been a resident of Jefferson since 1986, coming from Madison. Mr. Bodnar was a Veteran of the U. S. Army National Guard, serving during the Vietnam Era. He was married to Jayne R. Herrick on Sept. 23, 1979, in Madison, Ohio.

Mr. Bodnar was a 30-year firefighter with Mentor City Fire Dept., retiring in 2003.

Mr. Bodnar was a member of the Ashtabula County Fair Board and served as representative to the Jr. Fair Board and on the Market Animal Committee. In 2006, he was given a lifetime membership to the Ashtabula County Cattleman’s Assoc., where he served as acting president multiple times and in 2010 received the Dedicated Service Award; he was president of the Ashtabula County 4-H Foundation, where he chaired the golf outing and the pig roast. He was a member and CO-chair of the Ashtabula County Farm Bureau and headed the committees on Food and Animal Issues and Tractor Safety. In 2003, he received the OEAA Appreciation Award from the OSU Extension office; In 2005, he received the Ashtabula County 4-H Hall of Fame Award. Mr. Bodnar was a 30-year 4-H Advisor at the Lake and Ashtabula County Fairs; was vice-president of the Ashtabula County 4-H Advisory Committee; and was CO-advisor of the Prime Bovine 4-H Club.

Survivors include his wife, Jayne; a daughter, Alicia M. (Jeffery A. Mast) Foltz of Jefferson; step-children, James M. (Sonja) Trisket of Ashtabula, Patricia A. (James) Durant of Woodstock, Ga., Victor E. (Deanna) Jerome of Madison and Lee, Jay and Linda Bodnar; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara (Frank) Dombrowski of Stow.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Bodnar.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, March 14th, at the Jefferson Church of the Nazarene, 55 E. Satin St., Jefferson, with Pastor Erin Valenti officiating. Burial will be in North Madison Cemetery. Geneva Post #6846 of the VFW will offer Military Honors.

Calling Hours will be held Thursday, March 13th, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jefferson Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS & CREMATORY, INC., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson. The fire department will be standing honor guard.
