PIERPONT — Paul John Smegal, age 95, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 4, 2013.
The son of Frank and Johanna Smegal, he was born on Oct. 23, 1917, in Akron, Ohio. Paul had moved to the Ashtabula County area as a youngster and was a graduate of Jefferson High School, class of 1934.
On February 11, 1944, he married Mary Kraus and together they recently celebrated sixty-nine years of marriage. Paul and Mary operated the family farm in Pierpont until their retirement in 1978.
After moving to the Pierpont area, Paul became an active member of the community. He helped to found the Pierpont Volunteer Fire Department serving in many capacities. He was also elected to the Pierpont School Board and served several terms. In his younger years, Paul enjoyed roller skating and going to the dances, especially dances where polka music was offered.
Until recently, Mary and Paul spent their winters in Haines City, Fla., with Paul driving the entire way. They enjoyed their “Florida” time, but were always glad to return home to the family and friends. A steward of the land, Paul enjoyed the life of a farmer. Watching the seasons change from planting to harvest, gave him a feeling of fulfillment knowing that he cared for the land and in turn the land cared for him and his family for many years. A fisherman who could sit quietly by his pond or a lake, Paul enjoyed the solitude of being alone with his thoughts.
Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; their children, Shirley (Edwin) Arnold of Linesville, Pa. and David Smegal of Pierpont; grandchildren, Mary Schultz, Michael Capozzoli and Matthew Capozzoli; and loving nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Wayne Steed.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Lou Capozzoli; his brothers, Frank, Ed and Robert; and his parents, Frank and Johanna Smegal.
A Memorial Service will be held 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 8th, at CHILDS & WILLIAMS FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 96 St. Rt. 7, Pierpont, Ohio. The Rev. Dustin Leimgruber, Pastor of Pierpont Presbyterian Church, will be officiating.
Calling Hours will be observed from 5 p.m. until time of Service, Wednesday, at the Funeral Home.
If desired, contributions in Paul’s name may be made to the Pierpont Volunteer Fire Department; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
