ASHTABULA — Ruth Elizabeth Brunstad Miller, age 96, of Ashtabula, passed away quietly Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, with her loving family held tightly in her heart.
She was born April 1, 1917, to the late Oscar and Maria (Maenpa) Brunstad and the first granddaughter of Mikko and Lisa Maenpa who brought their Scandinavia heritage to the harbor.
She is survived by her sister, Helen Brunstad Wright of Oshkosh, Wis.; and her nieces, Patricia (Ek) Waskawic and Janis Michaels; and a nephew, Eugene (Betsy) Wright.
Ruth was married to the late Harold Miller for 54 years and has three children, Barbara (Eugene) Giacometti, Gwendolyn (Richard) Ganong and Harold (Sandy) Miller. She has ten grandchildren, Rick (Kristine) Ganong, Betsy (Mike) Dawson, Karen Ganong, Kristin Ganong, Rachel Miller, Abbigail Miller, Amy (Chris) McManus, Andrew Giacometti, Brian Giacometti and Todd (Heather) Giacometti. She rejoiced in the fact that she has ten great-grandchildren also, Ryan and Kimberly Ganong, Ted, Carolina and Charlie Dawson, Ally and Jack McManus, and Nora, Lucille and Bella Giacometti.
Ruth spent 85 years of her life living on Walnut Blvd. – It was home! She was a 65 year member of the Lake Erie Chapter #10 Order of Eastern Star, holding the position of organist for many years.
Ruth was a 1935 graduate of Harbor High School and a 1939 graduate of Kent State University. She taught third grade in the Ashtabula schools for many years.
Ruth’s greatest joy was that of being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and everyone loving her with all their hearts!
Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28th, at the Second Congregational Church, 319 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Glen Warner officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.
Calling Hours will from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 27th, at the Ashtabula Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with an Eastern Star Service at 6:45 p.m., conducted by Covered Bridge Chapter #591 OES.
Ruth had been a member of Second Congregational Church for 70 years and the family request in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the church.
