Roger E. Quickel

GENEVA — Roger Quickel, age 72, of Geneva, Ohio, crossed over to the spiritual world on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013. He died at home after a courageous battle with declining health.

Roger was born on Nov. 6, 1940, in Geneva, and lived in the local area all his life. He was the second child born to Clarence and Gladys (Bancroft) Quickel and was a 1959 graduate of Geneva High School.

Roger retired from Kennametal after working 28 years as a machinist in the special tooling department. He also previously worked at Fisher Spiegel.

Roger loved watching old westerns, classic films, NASCAR racing, Animal Planet and the History Channel. He was a big fan of John Wayne and Roy Rogers. He enjoyed classic cars and scooters, and was a member of The Good Time Cruisers and The Cushman Club of America.

Roger was a ham radio operator and a member of The National Association for Amateur Radio and The Quarter Century Wireless Association, Inc. He obtained his FCC Registered Amateur Radio License in 1958, while a junior in high school, and in 2003 he obtained an Amateur Extra License – the highest class you can receive. His call letters are K8MSS. He was also a skilled Skeet Shooter and received many trophies, as well as a first place plaque on a Hawaiian cruise in 2003.

Roger is survived by his beloved wife, Rebecca “Becky”, whom he married on March 19, 1998. He is survived by his daughters, Keri Quickel of Madison, Ohio, and Debbie (Dennis) Swatowski of Ashtabula, Ohio; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his step-sons, Dwayne McLaughlin of Mentor, Ohio, and Todd (Kristen) McLaughlin of Lyndhurst, Ohio; five step-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Mary Quickel of Geneva; and Aunt Corinne Bancroft of Geneva.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Quickel, and his parents, Clarence and Gladys Quickel.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 4th, at the Geneva Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, INC., 323 S. Broadway, Geneva, with Alisa H. Nierzejewski, Certified Celebrant, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Geneva.

Calling Hours will be Thursday, Oct. 3rd, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
