HARPERSFIELD TOWNSHIP — Betty Jane “Babe” Gecewich, age 91, of Harpersfield Township, Ohio, died at her home early Thursday morning, Oct. 18, 2012.
Born Nov. 26, 1920, in Conneaut, Ohio, she was the daughter of Clifford A. and Minnie (Halliday) Childs and a 1938 graduate of Conneaut High School.
Babe had worked in Geneva-on-the-Lake at one time for 10 years, and had also worked at the Harpersfield Board of Elections for 16 years.
Babe was a member of Rose Chapter #22 O.E.S. for more than 70 years, and a member of the former Covered Bridge Chapter of Sweet Adelines for eight years.
She enjoyed writing short stories, decorating and antiques.
Survivors include her son, Gary (Patty) Smith of Cleveland, Ohio; a step-daughter, Carol (Jim) Filkins of Carolina Shores, N.C.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her brother, Robert Childs of Seneca, S.C.; and more distant relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Gecewich in 1985; and a son, Jay Smith in 1973.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, on Friday, Oct. 26th, from 1 to 4 p.m. Inurnment will be in East Conneaut Cemetery.
