David M. Gioiello

ASHTABULA — David Michael Gioiello, age 89, of Valleyview Blvd., passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, in the Hospice Unit of Ashtabula County Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 18, 1924, the son of Michael and Ginnie (DeMatteo) Gioiello and had been a lifelong Ashtabula resident.

A 1941 graduate of Ashtabula High School, he served in the 4th Army Division of the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of corporal and receiving a Purple Heart before being honorably discharged. He was very proud of his service and belonged to the Disabled American Veterans.

Prior to his retirement, he worked at the Ashtabula Bow Socket as a welder and also for the United States Post Office.

A longtime member and one of the founders of the St. Joseph Mission Church, Our Lady of Miracles, he also belonged to the M.D.M. Society.

A lifelong Democrat, he was proud of his membership and accomplishments in the United Steel Workers Union. He loved trips to the casino and horseracing and was an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns fan.

His survivors include three children, David M. (Denese Deeds) Gioiello Jr. of Shelton, Conn., Melanie (William) Todd of Ashtabula and Christopher (Brandi) Gioiello of Sheffield Lake; eight grandchildren, Will Todd, Michelle Hackim, Samantha Waltz, and D. Michael III, Chandra, Kayla, Nicholas and Noah Gioiello; four great-grandchildren, David, Isabel, Miles and Graham; two brothers, Sam and Tony Collette, both of Ashtabula; one sister, Frances (Tony) Santiago of Ashtabula; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, whom he married March 2, 1946, Rose Mary (Marini) Gioiello on May 19, 2005; two sisters, Mary Raffenaud and Mamie Gill; one brother, Sylvester “Shy” Collette; and his parents.

A Service will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 8th, at the Knights of Columbus, formerly St. Joseph Mission - Our Lady of Miracles, 4317 West Ave., Ashtabula. Sister Laurie Divoky, Spiritual Care Coordinator for Hospice of the Western Reserve, will preside. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery with Full Military Honors provided by American Legion, Dewey-Howlett Post #103.

No calling hours will be observed.
