Joyce A. Swanson

SAYBROOK — Joyce A. Swanson, age 70, of Saybrook, Ohio, went home to be out of pain and with her loved ones in Heaven on Friday, Jan. 21, 2011.

She was born Dec. 30, 1940, in Geneva, Ohio, to Eleanor (Coursume) and Clifford William Henderson. She married the love of her life, Carl William Swanson of Ashtabula, on June 9, 1962.

A 1958 graduate of Ashtabula High School, she received her Bachelors degree from Kent State University. She worked as a Special Education teacher in Champion and taught K-8 at Buckeye and Ashtabula before retiring.

Joyce was proud to be the oldest of five sisters and enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Saybrook United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 25 years and was the Head of Missions for 10 years. She was also the treasurer of La Leche League and taught the principals of natural childbirth at Warren Trumbull and Ashtabula Hospitals.

Joyce enjoyed gardening, swimming, reading, aerobic dancing and gymnastics. She loved spending time with family, especially her husband Bill. Camping out west, hiking, photography and traveling were just some of her many hobbies. Out of 48 years of being married to Bill, Joyce particularly enjoyed their 35th wedding anniversary cruise around the Hawaiian Islands.

She is survived by her husband, Carl “Bill” Swanson of Saybrook Township; son, Steven William (Dawn) Swanson of Cleveland; daughter, Amanda Claire (Scot) Busser of Farmdale; grandchildren, Mikayla Wilpula and Monica, Philip and Spencer Busser; sisters, Jean L. (Michael) Gyure of Raleigh, N.C., Joan E. Henderson of Lyndhurst and Betty J. (Joseph) Kelly of Boulder, Colo.; and a brother-in-law, David VanDusen of Madison.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Eleanor Henderson; and a sister, Edith VanDusen.

Memorial Service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 27th, at Saybrook United Methodist Church, 7900 S. Depot Road, Saybrook, Ohio.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Saybrook United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 7900 S. Depot Road, Saybrook, Ohio 44004 or Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th St., Cleveland, Ohio 44119.
