COLUMBUS — Norman Kippen, age 89, of Columbus, formerly of Ashtabula, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013. 

Born on Dec. 3, 1923, to the late David and Rose (Shrieber) Kippen, Norman served in the U.S. Army during World War II and landed on Omaha Beach at Normandy during the second day of the invasion into France.  Norman married his first wife, Minerva (Perala) Kippen in 1948 and his second wife, Betty (Hayes Scott) Kippen on Oct. 17, 1981.

Norman was the owner/operator of The Ashtabula News Agency for 54 years. An independent newspaper distributor, he oversaw delivery of The Plain Dealer in the Ashtabula area. Dozens of Ashtabula area boys and men worked for him over the years before his retirement in 2002. Norman was 8 years old when he first delivered newspapers for his father, who established the distribution company in 1921.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 32 years, Minerva; and his brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Ruth (Pearlman) Kippen.

Norman is survived by his best friend and companion, Betty; brother, Harold (Fran) Kippen of Encino, Calif.; step-sons, Jerry (Pamela) Scott and Ronald (Linda) Scott of Columbus; several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; nephews, James, David and John Kippen; and a niece, Laura Kippen.

At the family’s request, services will be private.
