ASHTABULA — Violet Caroline Altman, age 80, died Monday, June 17, 2013, at Austinburg Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

She was born on May 15, 1933, in Adrian, Pa., the daughter of James and Lottie (Nolder) Shaffer. On June 9, 1948, Violet married John L. Altman and together they celebrated forty-four years of marriage, until his death in 1993. Violet and John moved their young family to the Ashtabula County area in 1950.

Violet attended the Church of the Nazarene in Ashtabula until her failing health would not allow her to attend. A talented woman, Violet was a wonderful baker, her homemade bread was a treat and on special occasions she would make “fried  bread” for her children.

Violet like to gamble, going to the casinos with her friends made for a wonderful time of fun and friendship. She enjoyed listening to country music and particularly enjoyed George Jones, Patsy Cline and Hank Williams.

Some of Violet’s closest friends were her family, her sisters and sisters-in-law were very special to her. The many games of Yahtzee, and cards were a wonderful time for all who came.

Survivors include three daughters, Vicki (Jack) Felde, Debra (Larry) Stiles, both of Ashtabula and Linda (Don) Lawrence of Jefferson; two sons, John L. (Penny) Altman Jr. and Charles B. Altman also of Ashtabula; 12 loving grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marie Minninger of Ashtabula, Della Inman of Attica, N.Y., and Cora Shaffer also of Ashtabula; her companion and close friend, Charles Taylor; and her son-in-law, Andy Brewer of Rock Creek.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Altman Sr.; a son, Daniel; a daughter, Karen Sue Brewer; her sisters, Sally Rosenberger and Ruby Toy; her brother, Kenneth Gamble; and her parents.

A Service will be held 12 p.m., Noon, on Friday, June 21st, at DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio. Burial will be at Monroe Kelloggsville Cemetery in Kelloggsville.

Calling Hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 20th, at DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula. An additional hour will be held from 11 a.m. until time of Service on Friday, June 21st, at 12 p.m., Noon.
