James R. Braid

CLEVELAND — James R. Braid, age 79, of North Kingsville, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013, in the Emergency Surgical Unit at the Cleveland Clinic.

Born June 3, 1934, in Painesville, Ohio, the son of the late Stanley and Lucille (Sturm) Braid. He grew up in Fairport Harbor, and graduated from Fairport Harbor High School in 1952, where he excelled in sports and academics.

His working career began delivering newspapers in grade school. After graduation, Jim was employed at Diamond Alkalie, where he worked for 13 years. He left Diamond for a new career as Director of Maintenance at Grand River Academy in Austinburg, where he was also the Chief Boiler Operator. While at Grand River Academy, he was also involved with student activities and was often a Mentor to many of the students. Jim also worked part-time for the Ohio Department of Transportation, where he laid fencing along Route 90 in Lake County.

James later bought a horse farm in Austinburg, where he bred and raised show horses, which won many awards at the Lake County Fair and other shows he entered.

In 1963, Jim launched a very successful Industrial, Retail, and Residential Janitorial Business, Ashtabula Floor Cleaners, which remained in business for 50 years. He and his wife Lois also started Mae’s Mitey Maid Service in 1970, which remained in business until August of 2012.

Mr. Braid was also a Boy Scout Leader for several years and enjoyed camping with the troop and attending scouting events. James ran the local chapter of the Aerocadets, where his cadets engaged in many award winning marching competitions.

Mr. Braid and his wife were members of Gateway Assembly of God Church in Austinburg. He was also a member of the Ashtabula Lions Club. A former member of the Redbrook Yacht Club, where he and his wife enjoyed boating. He was a volunteer Fireman for the North Kingsville Fire Department. Jim was an avid landscaping artist, and enjoyed landscaping his own home and many others. Jim loved classic cars, and was an avid gun and antique collector. He also operated Ja-Lo’s Antique Store. Most of all, Jim loved spending time with family, friends and business associates.
