ASHTABULA — Madeline Simon, age 92, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 26, 2013, in her home with her loving family by her side.
She was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Sept. 29, 1920, the daughter of Raymond and Emily (Charmley) Culver. Madeline grew up on Bois Blanc Island in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
While she served her country from 1942-1947 in the U.S. Merchant Marines during WWII, she met her loving husband, Louis "Louie" Simon, and on Feb. 13, 1947, they were married in Ashtabula, Ohio.
She was a devoted wife of 55 years and a loving mother of six children, loving grandma of 10 and great-grandmother of 5; with 1 on the way. She assisted her husband with his business ventures but she was primarily a stay at home mother and grandma and her life revolved around her family. Madeline and Louie were foster parents for the Catholic Service League for 30 years, taking in 60 children and babies until they were adopted. Madeline is affectionately known as "Grandma Simon" to the many neighborhood children, and their children that she babysat over the years.
She was a dedicated member of Our Lady of Peace Parish at Mother of Sorrows Church; the Cedars of Lebanon, the Elks Ladies Auxiliary, and is an inductee of the St. John High School Hall of Fame.
She is survived by her loving family; her children, Ray Simon of Oceanside, Calif., Carolyn Moore (fiancé Tim Gildersleeve) of Ashtabula, Paul Simon of Ashtabula and Charmley (Richard) Bond of Naples, Fla.; her grandchildren, Rachel Tolbert, Louie (Angela) Simon, P.J. Moore, Chris Moore, Marine Cpl. Michael Moore, Megan Moore (fiancé Jeremie Welch), Eric Paul Simon, Daniel O’Reilly and Caitlin O’Reilly; and her five great-grandchildren, Nicole Tolbert, Nick Tolbert, Nia Tolbert, Rhianon Simon and Lillian Simon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis on April 10, 2002; her twin sons, Thomas and John in infancy; her grandson, Mark Alan Moore at birth; her brothers, Raymond, Wilfred, Tom and Mark; and her sister, Mary.
