SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Robert J. Davis, age 89, Shadyside Ave., Saybrook Township, died Saturday morning, April 12, 2014, at Saybrook Landing where he had been a patient the past two months.

He was born Jan. 24, 1925, in Girard, Ohio, the son of Howard J. and Mary (Conlin) Davis and resided there until 1950 before moving to Ashtabula. Mr. Davis was a 1943 graduate of Girard High School. Following graduation he served three years in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. Upon returning from the war, he entered Kent State University and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.

In 1982, he retired from the Ashtabula City School District where he had taught Industrial Arts and served 10 years as an assistant principal.

Mr. Davis was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. He was a member of the Varsity K Club and Delta Epsilon Fraternity at KSU, member and past president of the Ashtabula Teachers Assoc., member of the William Farr Lodge #672 F. & A. M. in Girard, served 10 years as Saybrook Township Trustee, was a Captain and served 37 years on the Saybrook Volunteer Fire Dept. and a member of the Saybrook Firefighters Assoc.

Mr. Davis was co-founder of the Ashtabula Area School Employees Credit Union in 1955 and served as treasurer until 1987, now Community First Credit Union. His interests include being at all of his grandchildren’s sporting events, woodworking, yard work, gardening, fishing and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy M. (Larson) Davis, whom he married on June 4, 1955 in Ashtabula; four children, Meghan (Rees) Davis of Ashtabula, Jim (Michelle) Davis of Houston, Texas, Lori (David) Bretschneider of Owensboro, Ky. and Peter (Kathy) Davis of Ashtabula; and seven grandchildren, Kevin, Jonathan, Lauren, Katy, Audry, Stephanie and Andrea.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers, Richard, Jack, William, James and Walter.

Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Monday, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1342 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Quincy Worthington officiating. Visitation from 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, prior to the Service. Burial will be in Saybrook Cemetery.

Additional Calling Hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., today, at the Ashtabula Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND CREMATORY, 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
