CHARDON - - Nelson F. Johnson, age 88, of Chardon Township, Ohio, passed away Friday, October 20, 2006, at his home.

Born April 9, 1918, in Chardon, he was a son of the late Frank S. and Alta Ireta Johnson. Mr. Johnson lived in the Chardon area his whole life, with the exception of a short time in Donna, Texas, after his retirement. On June 10, 1939, Nelson F. Johnson married Irene Ruth Mayle in Chardon. She preceded him in death August 15, 1998.

Nelson was a welder for over 60 years. He worked for Chardon Welding periodically during his life, before retiring from Lubrizol in 1981 as a Maintenance Supervisor. A Veteran, Nelson was a Motor Sergeant for the U.S. Army during W.W.II, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.

He enjoyed reading westerns and romance novels later in life. While living in Donna, Texas, in the late 80's and early 90's, Nelson and his wife ran the post office at the Victoria Palms Resort where they lived. He loved to work, as well as, repair anything. He enjoyed building his own homes and working out in the woods.

Survivors include two daughters, Ellen (David) Cline of Austinburg, Ohio and Thelma (Paul) Jozwiak of Streetsboro, Ohio; four sons, Walter (Joan) Johnson of Ashtabula, Ohio, Jerry (Kathy) Johnson and Terry (Anne) Johnson, both of Chardon, Ohio, and Jeffrey (Marcia) Johnson of Lakewood, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha Williams of Huntsburg, Ohio; dearest friend, Virginia Wilcox; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene R. (née Mayle) Johnson; his parents, Frank S. and Alta Ireta (née Robinson) Johnson; a brother, Ernest Johnson; a sister, Marie Rice; and one grandchild.

Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 2006, at BURR FUNERAL HOME, 116 South Street, (on State Route 44, 500´ south of Route 6/Chardon Square), Chardon, Ohio, with Pastor Adrian Halverstadt, of Morning Star Friends Church, Munson Township, Ohio, officiating. Burial will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township.

Visitation at the Funeral Home will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 23, 2006, and Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m.

ROCK CREEK - - Benjamin L. Brettell, age 89, of Rock Creek, Ohio, died Thursday morning, October 19, 2006, at the Country Club Retirement Center in Ashtabula.

He was born March 12, 1917, in Niles, Ohio, the son of Lucius D. and Mary (Lindsay) Brettell. A graduate of Rock Creek High School, Ben served with the U.S. Army in Europe and the Philippines during W.W. II.

In 1980, he retired from Union Carbide in Ashtabula.

He was a member of the Rock Creek V.F.W. Post and a past member of the Rock Creek Library Board. He enjoyed carpentry and especially loved and enjoyed his grand and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Brettell is survived by his children, James Brettell of Rock Creek, Nancy (Peter) Beedlow of Colona, Illinois, and Janet (Chuck) Burk of Lincoln, Nebraska; four granddaughters, two grandsons, and six great-grandchildren; a brother, Lucius (Joyce) Brettell of Rock Creek; and a sister, Ann Niemela of Ashtabula.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Charleen, June 15, 1992; a brother, Wayne Brettell; and infant sister, Gwendolyn Brettell.

In keeping with Mr. Brettells wishes, he will be cremated with a Memorial Service on Tuesday, October 24, 2006, at the Chapel in Union Cemetery, Rock Creek, Ohio, with Pastor Meredith Coleman, of the Jefferson United Methodist Church, as celebrant.

MECCA TOWNSHIP - - Henry R. Smith, age 81, of Mecca Township, Ohio, died Saturday morning, October 21, 2006, at the Concord Care Center in Fowler, Ohio.

He was born on July 4, 1925, in Austinburg, Ohio, the son of the late Henry Oscar Smith and the late Mary Viola Jones Smith. He was a Veteran of W.W.II having served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Nassau.

Henry was employed by U. S. Steel, where he had worked as a Group Leader in the Eighteen Inch Finish Mill for 31 years, retiring in 1980.

A lifetime Mecca resident, Mr. Smith was a member of the Mecca Community Church and had attended school in both New Lyme and Mecca. He enjoyed farming, traveling and playing with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Helen M. (Mozingo) Smith, whom he married on June 14, 1946; a daughter, Susan (Andy) Jones Hodovan of Mecca; two grandchildren, Marlo Jones Chilson of Florida and William D. Jones II of Utah; a brother, John Smith of Ashtabula; and a sister, Pearl Kaster of Bristolville. Also surviving are two step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Henry was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray, Richard and Fred Smith; a sister, Ruth McCune; a grandson, Jared Chilson; and a son-in-law, William D. Jones.

Arrangements are being handled by SHAFER-WINANS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 164 North High Street, Cortland, Ohio, where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 2006.
