David L. Moody Jr.

ASHTABULA — David Louis Moody Jr., age 89, of West Ave., passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013, in the ICU of Ashtabula County Medical Center surrounded by his loving wife and children.

He was born Jan. 5, 1924, in Mobile, Ala., the son of Dwight L. and Lu Ella (McClinton) Moody and had been an Ashtabula resident since 1951. David graduated from Eureka High School in Hattiesburg, Miss. He went on to attend Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Ala., where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Commercial Dietetics in 1951. There, he met the love of his life, Mary Louise Hill, whom he married June 2, 1949.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II before being honorably discharged on August 31, 1945.

A pillar of Peoples Baptist Church for 61 years, he loved nothing more than donating his time to the beautification of the church edifice. In addition, he served for a time as a church trustee.

Prior to his retirement in 1989, David served as Director of Nutritional Services for the Ashtabula County Medical Center (formerly Ashtabula General Hospital). In 2010, he and his wife received the ACMC Breaking the Barrier Community Impact Award for their efforts as the first African American professional couple in Ashtabula County. Moreover, their expertise, innovation, and work ethic provided a higher quality of care and more efficient dietary methods to professional food service. They also helped in breaking down the barriers of racial discrimination in their era; and helped other African Americans gain rightful employment based on their talents.

He was formerly a member of Rotary International and the Lions Club. In addition, he received a number of awards including: The ACMC Service Award, The  Hospital and Food Administration Award from Cornell University, and The American Hospital Association, Administrators Award.

His survivors include his wife of nearly 64 years, Mary (Hill) Moody; three children, Stephanie Moody of Ashtabula, Rosalind Moody-Lanton of Cincinnati, and Dr. David L. (Linda) Moody III of Mentor; and four grandchildren, Ferrial Hussein Lanton, Kristopher David Moody, Timothy Michael Moody and Aaron Louis Moody.
