SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Elmer H. “Sonny” Newell, age 78, died on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.

The son of Elmer E. and Elizabeth M. (Luce) Newell, he was born on April 21, 1935, in Ashtabula, Ohio, and had remained an area resident.

A proud Veteran of the United States Navy, Sonny served from 1952 to 1960. He was a true patriot inspiring others to serve their country. He retired from Eltech, formerly Diamond Shamrock, after 30 years of service. Sonny enjoyed his job and the many friends he made.

On Feb. 1, 1962, he married his best friend and soul mate, his wife, Delta Lou Furry. Their marriage was one of joy, laughter, and love.

Sonny enjoyed a quiet day of fishing, camping with his family and trips to Las Vegas with his wife, Delta. Their trips to Alaska and Hawaii were wonderful memories that they shared together. Never one to pass up an opportunity to play cards, he always let you know that he was going to win this hand no matter what cards you held. His gardens were the pride of the neighborhood.

His greatest joy came from being with his family. The times spent with Delta and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchild were a source of comfort and joy. He was the rock to which they all looked to.

Sonny will be remembered for his warm and caring ways, his love of the outdoors, and for his pride and love of his family. A wonderful husband, dad, Papa, and “Pa” he will be missed. Our hearts will always feel the warmth of his love.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Delta; their children, Mona (Gennaro) Marrone of East Brunswick, N.J.,  and Keith (Nichelle) Newell of Ashtabula; grandchildren, Dan (Jamie) Copeland, Nick (Jess) Marrone, Andrew Marrone, Angela Marrone, Marcus Newell and Sarah Newell, Corey, Kailie and Kylie Caudill; his beloved great-grandson, Rey Copeland; his son-in-law, Robert Wight; his siblings, June Hurley, Jerry (Chris) Michellis and Kenny (Carol) Niemi, all of Ashtabula; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Wight on April 16, 2011; and his parents.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct., 23rd, at DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, with Kathleen Shaffer officiating.
