Elsie J. Howell

HOUSTON, Texas — Elsie Jane Sanderson Howell, age 96, died in Houston, Texas, on Sunday, March 31, 2013.

She was born in Sebring, Ohio, on Feb. 15, 1917, the daughter of the late Lewis Edward Sanderson and Frances Alice (Bayley) Sanderson. She moved from Ashtabula, Ohio, to Houston in 1994, where she lived for 19 years.

Elsie graduated from McKinley High School in Sebring in 1935. By graduation time from Mount Union College, Elsie had received numerous awards and was listed in Who’s Who in American College and Universities. After college she took a six-week study tour of the American and Canadian Rocky Mountains with Transylvania College in Kentucky and two summer sessions at Cornell University in New York. Her first teaching position was at McKinley High School in Sebring for four years before marrying the late Edward A. Howell in 1943. She returned to teaching in 1956. She taught at Jefferson High School in Jefferson, Ohio, for four years before transferring to Edgewood High School in 1960. Elsie retired in 1977.

Mrs. Howell was a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association; she also belonged to the Buckeye Local Teachers Association and the National Education Association. She was a very active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Ashtabula, Ohio, serving on the Altar Guild and numerous committees. She helped introduce the Bereavement Program to her church community. 

Following her retirement, she was a volunteer for Contact (crisis line), the Hospital Auxiliary, and Hospice. She was a member of the Literacy Volunteer Program of America and tutored at Ridgeview Elementary School. After moving to Houston, Texas, she served on the Altar Guild at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and was a Stephen Minister.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Allan Beckering of Houston, Texas; her son, Dr. Richard Howell of Asheville, N.C.; five grandchildren including Lindsay (Howell) Moser, Bryan Beckering, Kevin Beckering, Evan Howell and Chris Howell; and two great-grandchildren, Zara Howell and Nolan Beckering.
