LEESBURG, Fla. — Douglas B. Amidon, age 85, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, Fla.

Douglas was a lifelong area resident of Ashtabula and the son of Mose C. and Lettie (Bevington) Amidon. He married the love of his life, Velma (Helwig) on Jan. 8, 1949. Douglas graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1945, attended Kent State University and trained under the GI Bill in office and machine repair.

Mr. Amidon founded, owned and operated Ashtabula Office Equipment, Inc. with his wife Velma for 36 years when they retired to Leesburg, Fla. He was a Director and Vice-Chairman of the Board of First Federal Savings and Loan of Ashtabula. He also served on the board of Children’s Services and was Secretary/ Treasurer of the Ashtabula Chamber of Commerce. Douglas was a Past President of The Ashtabula Exchange Club and served as president of several PTA and PTO associations where he was active in the planning and running of several school levies.

Mr. Amidon was also a member of the Ashtabula Power Squadron and served on the vestry of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, as well as serving as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. Douglas was a life member of the BPOE #208 Elks, a life member of VFW Post #943 and a member of the American Legion. Mr. Amidon proudly served in the ETO as a tank crewman with the U.S. Constabulary in Germany during World War II.

He enjoyed golf, bowling, gardening, traveling and photography. Douglas was a devoted full time caretaker for his wife during her extended illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma; brothers, Joseph Amidon and M.C. (Bud) Amidon; and sisters, Alice Young, Virginia Tainsh, Harriet Alexander and Dorthea Beld.

Surviving him are is daughter, Dr. Susan (Mark Stevens) Amidon of Columbus; a son, Bill (Nancy) Amidon of Ashtabula; grandson, Dylan Stevens of Columbus; granddaughters, Christen (Ryan) Wood of Willoughby and Kelsey Amidon of Kirtland; and a great-grandson, Ethan Douglas Wood.

Memorial Services will be held 12 Noon, Wednesday, Jan. 8th, at the Ashtabula Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery with American Legion Post #103 conducting Military Rites.

A Calling Hour will be held from 11 a.m. until time of Service at Noon, Wednesday, Jan. 8th, at the Funeral Home.
