Gary S. Rock

ASHTABULA — Gary Stephen Rock, age 56, passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, in the Hospice Unit of Ashtabula County Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 11, 1957, in Burbank, Calif., the son of Michael and Elaine Rose (Mosinski) Rock and had been an Ashtabula resident most of his life. He attended Catholic schools for his elementary years, then graduated from Edgewood High School. He also took some college courses at Kent State University,  Ashtabula Campus.

Gary worked at Plasticolors for 17 years before an injury forced him into retirement in 2002.

Known for his kind and compassionate nature, Gary was always giving of himself and had donated over 11 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. He was  extremely handy and always seemed to have multiple projects going at once as he was always eager to learn new things. He loved animals and was a true people person.

Gary always stayed active. He went to the YMCA everyday for years and enjoyed his Harley, making homemade wine, listening to Journey, and traveling. No  matter what challenges life had thrown at him, he always stayed positive and worked hard to overcome them.

He is survived by his fiancé, Liz Herl, who has been faithfully by his side for 19 years as a friend and companion; two children, Stephen Rock (fiance’ Alison  Long) and Ashley Rock (fiance’ Chris Goist) of Youngstown; two grandchildren, Draven and Jayden Rock; two brothers, Michael Rock of Ashtabula and David Rock of Willoughby; several nieces and nephews; his first wife, (Stephen’s mother) Rhiannon Rock of North Kingsville; his second wife, (Ashley’s mother) Kym Rock of Ashtabula; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his aunt, Delores “Aunt Dodo” Kovach who helped raise him.

Calling Hours will be held at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 27th, with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 8 p.m. Friends are encouraged to bring a picture or story to share. The Rev. Anthony Boyd will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 433 Center St., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004 or honor Gary by donating blood in his memory  to help save a life. Another option could be a donation to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for Paralysis and Spinal Cord Injuries, in care of Reeve Foundation, 636 Morris Turnpike, Suite 3A, Short Hills, N.J. 07078.
