MENTOR — Joseph Henry Salvato Jr., age 82, of Mentor, died peacefully Friday, April 19, 2013, in Altercare Nursing Home.

He was born in Ashtabula on Sept. 2, 1930, son of the late Joseph H. Salvato and Gretchen (Beckman) Salvato. Joe was a 1947 graduate of Ashtabula High School.

He retired in 1975 from Rockwell Brake Company in the Sales Division after 25 years of service. Following his retirement, Joe obtained his Real Estate license and worked at Realty Concepts and in 1977 became the manager of their office. In September of 1976, Joe became the owner of Salvato’s Pizza on Bunker Hill Road in Ashtabula, Ohio. Over the next few years, Joe went on to purchase two additional Salvato’s Pizza locations in the harbor in Ashtabula and in Jefferson, Ohio. In 2004, he sold the last remaining Salvato’s Pizza on Bunker Hill Road.

Joe was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was an usher for several years. A member of the Rockwell Brake Company bowling team, he was very active in the community by being the youth chairman for the YMCA/YWCA; a member of the Y Indian Guides and Y Adventures of the YMCA; member of the Ashtabula High School Band Boosters; and an officer and board member of Ashtabula County Tourism. He was also on the AHS 1947 Class Reunion Planning Committee for many years.

He is survived by a daughter, Janet and her husband Ted Dombroski of Guilford, Conn.; two sons, Patrick Salvato and his wife Robin of Orlando, Fla. and Brian Salvato and his wife Kristin of Springfield, Va.; seven grandchildren, Michael and Brian Dombroski, Krysta Salvato and Kara Salvato and Brianna, Zachary and Thomas Salvato; and one great-grandchild, Serenity Hayes. Joe is also survived by his long time companion, Donna Butts of Mentor, Ohio.

He was predeceased by his youngest daughter, Sheila Salvato in 2012; his father, Joseph Salvato Sr.; and his mother and step-father, Gretchen and Glenn McKay.

A Graveside Service and burial will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 24th, at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Grove Drive, Ashtabula, Ohio. The Rev. Raymond Thomas, Pastor of Our Lady of Peace Parish, will preside.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Ashtabula County Family YMCA, 263 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
