Raymond V. Dunmire

MAYLENE, Ala. — Raymond Veryl Dunmire, age 87, of Maylene, Ala., passed away Friday, May 24, 2013, at his residence.

He was born in Vandergrift, Pa., the son of the late Robert and Faye (Stubrick) Dunmire Sr. A brother, Ivan Russell Dunmire also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth March; three sons, Perry (Deborah) Dunmire of Yorkville, Ill., Cary (Dee) Dunmire of Villa Rica, Ga., and Barry (Lori) Dunmire of Piedmont, S.D.; two grandchildren, Kailey Dunmire and Rachel Dunmire, both of Zelienople, Pa.; his twin brother, Robert (Kathryn) Dunmire II of DeLand, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Dunmire of North Apollo, Pa.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Ray was a World War II Veteran who served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943-46. He was extremely proud to have been a radio operator stationed on Kwajalein Island. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Having graduated from Thiel College (BA) in Greenville, Pa., and Florida State University (MA) in Tallahassee, Fla., he was a professional librarian for 43 years and was a life member of the American Library Assoc. He served as Director of Libraries from 1953-65 at Thiel College; 1965-69 at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville, N.C.; and from 1969-83 at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he was also a charter member of the Center for Western Studies.  He continued his career with the University of Montevallo, Ala., retiring in 1996 (Professor Emeritus) after serving as Associate Professor and Technical Services Librarian.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he served as Chairman of the Building Committee, Church Council and taught Sunday school. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed his family, coin and stamp collecting, traveling, photography, history, woodworking, and delivering Meals on Wheels.

Graveside Service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 21st, in Oakdale Cemetery, Jefferson, Ohio, with the Rev. Fred Grimm, of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, officiating. Geneva Post #6846 of the VFW will offer Military Honors.
